Subject: Revised CCP Eligibility/Guidance in Response to COVID-19

Hello,

I hope this email finds you well. In case you and your students did not know, the guidelines for academic year 2020 (summer and fall semesters) have changed in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Southern State wanted to provide some of the highlights around these changes so that you could share with your students and others within your district that may find the information useful. On Friday, March 27th the Director of CCP, Dr. Larisa Harper sent out a memo highlighting the New College Credit Plus Flexibility/Guidance. Dr. Harper also provided a guidance document that outlines certain situations. Here are some items we wanted to highlight:

=         The Intent to Participate deadline was extended from April 1 to May 1. This is for public, private, and homeschool students.

=         Public schools will accept Intent to Participate forms via electronic mail, postal mail, or other options using social distancing.

=         Nonpublic students and homeschooled students should complete the electronic Intent and Funding Application and upload the appropriate documents including admission letters from colleges (provisional or fully accepted or some other document showing progress with application) by May 1.

=         Counseling sessions should occur remotely via telephone or other online method to the greatest extent practicable. This can be individual or to a group but must be completed prior to May 1, 2020.

=         If counseling cannot occur prior to May 1, 2020, and the Intent to Participate form includes this counseling as a requirement for signature, a notation should be made by the student/family that counseling is pending and will be made up at a later date. Lack of time to counsel will not be a reason to prohibit students from participating.

=         Students are now eligible to participate in the program with an overall HS GPA of 3.0.

=         Placement into courses does still apply. No placement assessments are being offered through April at SSCC, but when testing becomes available again students will be able to test if they would like for placement/prerequisite purposes.

=         Once a student has been determined as eligible, has been admitted, and has enrolled in summer and/or fall semester courses, the student remains eligible for the remainder of their participation in the program. There is no need to re-test for eligibility purposes.

Some other items outside of the guidance document:

=         For those students that do not meet the new 3.0 GPA eligibility requirement for summer and fall semester but would still like to participate, these students will need to complete a placement assessment once we are able to provide testing. If you have any students that fall into this group and want to be contacted about scheduling a future placement assessment, please send them to this link https://www.sscc.edu/admissions/future-placement-assessments.shtml. They should submit the information that is requested and they will be contacted to schedule testing once the provisions around COVID-19 are dropped. Currently, there are no students being scheduled for assessments as the COVID-19 situation changes daily. Please advise students that it could be several weeks before they are contacted to schedule a placement assessment.

=         Please continue to email transcripts with SSID to [email protected] or mail to 100 Hobart Dr., Hillsboro, OH 45133Students should check the email they provided on their CCP application for communication from the SSCC Admissions Office.

=         All SSCC staff is working remotely so things may take a little longer than normal. If there are any questions about a specific student or document please do not hesitate to reach out.

=         Lauri Bolitho ([email protected]), Admissions Assistant, will continue to email an excel spreadsheet to counselors with students that have applied for CCP admission. This spreadsheet will let you know where your students stand in the process and what is needed to move them through the process, if anything.

=         We received a question about grade weighting. This was not talked about in the Guidance from the state, but Dr. Harper did provide an answer:

“For unweighted/weighted GPA, we did consider specifying one or the other in the guidance, but decided not to do so. We did not want to add the burden of re-calculating an weighted GPA to become an unweighted GPA. The college should use whatever GPA is indicated on the student's high school transcript.”

We are here to help however we can during this unprecedented time. Thank you for all of you do and for working with Southern State.

Stay safe and stay healthy,

Jimmy
